It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. Importantly, Corporación América Airports S.A. (NYSE:CAAP) does carry debt. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?

When Is Debt Dangerous?

Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. A Look At Corporación América Airports' Liabilities

According to the last reported balance sheet, Corporación América Airports had liabilities of US$603.7m due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$2.06b due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of US$525.9m and US$214.9m worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling US$1.92b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

This deficit is considerable relative to its market capitalization of US$2.81b, so it does suggest shareholders should keep an eye on Corporación América Airports' use of debt. This suggests shareholders would be heavily diluted if the company needed to shore up its balance sheet in a hurry.

We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. We would also note that Infrastructure industry companies like Corporación América Airports commonly do use debt without problems. Looking at all the aforementioned factors together, it strikes us that Corporación América Airports can handle its debt fairly comfortably. Of course, while this leverage can enhance returns on equity, it does bring more risk, so it's worth keeping an eye on this one.
