Barrett Business Services Insiders Sold US$2.9m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy
Share
Listen to the news

The fact that multiple Barrett Business Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:BBSI) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Barrett Business Services Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the President, Gary Kramer, for US$1.2m worth of shares, at about US$35.05 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$38.05. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 13% of Gary Kramer's holding.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Barrett Business Services insiders own 3.4% of the company, worth about US$35m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Do The Barrett Business Services Insider Transactions Indicate?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Barrett Business Services shares in the last quarter. Still, the insider transactions at Barrett Business Services in the last 12 months are not very heartening. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
