Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. We note that Delta Air Lines, Inc. (NYSE:DAL) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that Delta Air Lines had US$16.2b of debt in March 2025, down from US$19.2b, one year before. On the flip side, it has US$3.71b in cash leading to net debt of about US$12.5b.
The latest balance sheet data shows that Delta Air Lines had liabilities of US$29.7b due within a year, and liabilities of US$32.2b falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of US$3.71b and US$3.65b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by US$54.5b.
This deficit casts a shadow over the US$25.6b company, like a colossus towering over mere mortals. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. At the end of the day, Delta Air Lines would probably need a major re-capitalization if its creditors were to demand repayment.

We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). The advantage of this approach is that we take into account both the absolute quantum of debt (with net debt to EBITDA) and the actual interest expenses associated with that debt (with its interest cover ratio).
With a debt to EBITDA ratio of 1.6, Delta Air Lines uses debt artfully but responsibly. And the fact that its trailing twelve months of EBIT was 8.0 times its interest expenses harmonizes with that theme. But the other side of the story is that Delta Air Lines saw its EBIT decline by 6.3% over the last year. That sort of decline, if sustained, will obviously make debt harder to handle. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Delta Air Lines's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. Finally, while the tax-man may adore accounting profits, lenders only accept cold hard cash. So the logical step is to look at the proportion of that EBIT that is matched by actual free cash flow. Looking at the most recent three years, Delta Air Lines recorded free cash flow of 30% of its EBIT, which is weaker than we'd expect. That's not great, when it comes to paying down debt.
Mulling over Delta Air Lines's attempt at staying on top of its total liabilities, we're certainly not enthusiastic. But at least it's pretty decent at covering its interest expense with its EBIT; that's encouraging. Overall, it seems to us that Delta Air Lines's balance sheet is really quite a risk to the business. So we're almost as wary of this stock as a hungry kitten is about falling into its owner's fish pond: once bitten, twice shy, as they say.
